He is a graduate of the Faculty of Aeroengines of Kazan Aviation Institute (1967), where he obtained the Candidate (1970) and Doctoral (1977) degrees in the engineering sciences. Since 1983 he is Head of the Thermogasdynamics Department of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He has been Professor in Aeroengine Theory since 1981.

His current research activity includes the following topics: Swirl and vortex flows (fundamentals and applications); Curved flows and rotating systems; Advanced vortex technologies and aerothermodynamics of air-cooled aeroengines, where he has published 12 books, more than 300 papers and produced around 70 Russian and Ukrainian patents. His most notable edition is a four volume book ‘Heat Transfer and Hydrodynamics in Centrifugal Fields’, summarizing the global experiences in the field. He has supervised some thirty postgraduate students to successful completion.

He is Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1990), Academician of Aerospace Academy of Ukraine (1995), Honorary Professor of Cardiff University (United Kingdom). He has made numerous international visits to USA, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Israel, Korea, China and other countries to give presentations and lectures, to scientific seminars on his research. A Khalatov is a holder of the Award of the National Academy of Sciences (1992) and many prestigious international awards, including Grants of CRDF, Royal Society (UK), NATO Scientific Committee (Belgium), G. Sorous Fund, and others.
